Am I Ready?
The routes for the CanAm rides all have great scenery, supported rest stops, and are mostly flat. If you have never done a long ride before this may be a good time to try one.
Here are some basic guidelines to help you pick the distance that is best for you:
The 100 Mile Century is challenging for the distance but easier than most 100 mile rides. To be ready to ride the century you should:
- Be able to ride at least 15-17 miles per hour (27 kph) on flat ground for several hours at a time.
- Be able to sit on your bike for 6 to 8 hours with breaks.
- Have completed a ride of at least 50 miles without distress.
- Be comfortable riding with others and in traffic on public roadways.
The 62 Mile Metric Century can accomodate a wider range of riders. Whatever your speed, you should be able to find a group to ride with. To be ready for a metric century you should:
- Be able to ride at least 13 - 15 miles per hour (24 kph) on flat ground for two or more hours at a time.
- Be able to sit on your bike for 4 hours with breaks.
- Have completed a ride of at leat 25 miles without distress. You will need to ride up to 20 miles between rest stops.
- Be comfortable riding with others and in traffic on public roadways.
The 35 Mile "City" Ride will have some strong riders but most will be more relaxed. If you have done any serious riding you should be able to complete the 35 mile ride. You should:
- Be able to ride at least 14 miles an hour (23 kph) on flat ground.
- Be able to ride for two hours or more with breaks.
